Past & Present
gb3 is the musical side project for Underground Lovers guitarist Glenn Bennie. It is a collaborative project with producer Tim Prince (Crazy Baldheads) and a range of vocalists and musicians.
The most recent gb3 release,’Damaged/Controlled’ (2010) was co-written and recorded with Church frontman Steve Kilbey. The album also featured contributions from Underground Lovers vocalist Philippa Nihill as well as Ricky Maymi from The Brian Jonestown Massacre on guitar.
In 2006, gb3 released the album, ‘Emptiness is our Business’. The cd once again featured vocal contributions from Kilbey and Nihill, as well as collaborations with Adalita (Magic Dirt), Grant McLennan (The Go-Betweens), Angie Hart (Frente), Sianna Lee, Stephen Cummings and Sarah Blasko.
In 2003, the first gb3 cd, ‘Circlework’ was released. The album featured Philippa Nihill on vocals, as well as a range of instrumental tracks co produced with Robert Goodge (Essendon Airport and I’m Talking’.)
Live shows are a rarity for gb3, with a handful of cd launches performed over the course of a nine year period. The live line up has been fairly consistent though, featuring Andrew Nunns (Autohaze and Underground Lovers) on drums, Maurice Argiro (Underground Lovers) on bass and Robert Tickner (Conway Savage Band) on guitar. Others to join gb3 live on stage have been Graham Lee (Triffids) on Pedal Steel, Rick Maymi (BJM) on guitar, Richard Andrew (Underground Lovers) on drums and Rowan Smith (Macguffins) on keyboards.
Reviews
- For a guy who spends minimal time at the microphone, preferring the shadows of stage left, there is no mistaking Bennie's characteristic guitar playing and warm demeanour. He is a truly gifted and unique talent. - Your Gigs
- Breathtaking melodies and guitar harmonies with that iconic and classic Aussie-male sound that Kilbey is known for. - Alternative Media
- The spectral shoegaze piece Damaged/Controlled and meditative instrumental Deranged/Controlled form the album’s two-part centrepiece, while the serene In Innocence serves as an impeccable finish. - Rave Magazine
