Past & Present

The everlasting sediment of 1980s Australia’s Hip Hop underground, 1200 Techniques hand crafted home-grown hip hop and would later work to define it.

In moments 1200 hit radio airplay, storming nationwide, reaching success unparalleled by 2001 but fans of Hip Hop were tasting 1200’s funk rock beats back in 1998 with ‘Hard as Hell” via Triple J. Mainstream success came fast and by 2002, 1200 Techniques were awarded the Best Hip-Hop Act at the national Dance Music Awards. The first single from ‘Choose One’ was “Karma”, reaching the top 40 of the Australia ARIAnet singles chart—peaking at #36—and took the 2002 ARIA Award for Best Video and Best Independent.

2004 saw the release of Consistency Theory which included singles “Eye of the Storm” and “Where Ur At?”. The former continued the 1200 tradition receiving heavy rotation on air, attracting 40 singles chart, peaking at #35. Following the album’s release, the group appeared at the Big Day Out festival in early 2004. Consistency Theory would later peaked at #38 on the album chart. Why this band has been on hiatus since 2005 is anyone’s guess – here’s wishing their return.
